Guest Spot - Richard Tearle

RICHARD TEARLE

although Richard's anthology of short stories - Melody Mayhem - are not all 'historical' he is our senior reviewer here on Discovering Diamonds
(with 'senior' having several meanings!) so I think he deserves a Shout Out Guest Spot!

"Richard Tearle has the knack of dropping you into the world of recent history so that you feel like you remember the 50s and 60s whether you were there or not."
 - Annie Whitehead, Author, Winner of the HWA/Dorothy Dunnett Short Story Award and Judge of the HNS Short Story Award

"Evocative, observant and clever – big worlds in little stories"
- Alison Morton

"I enjoyed the escape into a dream world where the stories were so personal I thought I was looking into the author's soul"
- Mercedes Rochelle, Author

These short stories are an open window to my little world; my love of history ranges from the so-called 'Dark Ages', through the Plantagenets and Richard III, past the Napoleonic Wars and on to things that I remember in my lifetime.

Combining my love of music of all kinds - a love inherited from my mother, a consummate pianist who would play every day - and of writing, the opportunity to write stories based on or inspired by my favourite songs was a no-brainer.

But not all my stories are music related. Part Two of this anthology features stories on a number of different topics, both historical and contemporary. All are the product of my imagination but there have been sparks from real life events - past and present.

The story 'Corners Of My Mind' first appeared in the anthology 'Right Trusty and Well Beloved' (details below) and is reproduced here with kind permission.

I am delighted to include two stories in each section from my mentors, Helen Hollick and Barbara Gaskell Denvill who gave me such encouragement in publishing this volume that I felt it only right to ask them to contribute something for me.

I am also greatly indebted to Gill Trewick of Gaskell Press for offering me the chance of publishing this anthology.  And Gill is also responsible for the lovely, eye catching cover. Working with her was so easy and it is my hope that we can do so again.

I do hope that you enjoy what I hope will be my first anthology and if you have done so, a nice little comment on Amazon will really make my day.

RIGHT TRUSTY and WELL BELOVED
(Grant Me the Carving of My Name)

*
My very first published work was included in this anthology of  stories about Richard III alongside some super authors

"I want you to tell my real story… Use any talent you have to show me in my true light, not painted black with Tudor propaganda. My new army must be wordsmiths, not soldiers; artists, not knights; musicians, not warriors. We will lay siege to the towers of Tudor lies and bring them crashing down…"Who, for you, is the real Richard III?Is it the boy, exiled in fear to the Continent aged seven? The loyal warrior, brother to Edward IV? The young man struck by tragedy? The just and rightful king? Or Thomas More’s and Shakespeare’s infamous villain? You can meet them all within these pages … or can you? This follow-up to the 2018 anthology "Grant Me the Carving of My Name" showcases short stories and poems by international authors inspired by all aspects of King Richard III.

  3. Using few words, Richard has the rare and special knack of recreating the sounds and smells, the aura if you like, of an epoch. His stories set in the 50s and 60s took me right back. Wonderful stuff.

    1. Thank you so much, Jane! I think that, because I grew up in those eras, the memories of what was new have stayed with me. Reproducing them in stories is a special trip down Memory Lane for me too!
