For June a Novel Conversion with Andora Pett and Richard

To be a little different this one is not historical...
Meet
Andorra Pett

Q: Hello, I’m Helen the host of Discovering Diamonds Novel Conversations, please do make yourself comfortable. Would you like a drink? Tea, coffee, wine – something stronger? You’ll find a box of chocolates and a bowl of fruit on the table next to you, please do help yourself. I believe you are a character in Richard Dee’s novel entitled Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café. Would you like to introduce yourself? Are you a lead character or a supporting role?
AHello, I’m Andorra Pett, café owner and reluctant amateur detective. Nothing to drink, thank you, but I will tuck into those chocolates.

Q: What is the novel about?
A: I’m a woman wronged, who’s left it all behind. Instead of moving to the seaside to start again, I’ve gone a little over the top. Somehow, I’m still not too sure how, I ended up on a mining station, orbiting Saturn. Then there was this body and, well I just had to try and find out the truth.

Q: No spoilers, but are you a ‘goodie’ or a ‘baddie’? (Or maybe you are both!)
A: I try to be good, but wherever I go, things keep happening around me. My mother used to say that I attracted incidents.

Q:  Tell me about another character in the novel – maybe your best friend, lover or partner … or maybe your arch enemy!
A: Cy is my best mate, he was my business partner back on Earth and someone who always understood me. We’re not romantically involved but he keeps me focused and gets me out of trouble. He wanted a change, the same as I did and we ended up on the edge of civilisation together.

Q: Is this the only novel you have appeared in, or are there others in a series?
A: I also appear in Andorra Pett on Mars, where Cy and I get involved with more wrongdoing, everyone leaves it to us (again) to sort things out. And my next adventure, where I help my estranged sister will be out soon. I’ve left Cy at home for that one. Richard also has more adventures up his sleeve for me (or so he says).

Q: What is one of your least favourite scenes you appear in?
A: I don’t like getting captured, which seems to be a thread in my new life. There are some bad people out there, who don’t always want the truth to come out. It takes a lot of thinking to escape.

Q: And your favourite scene?
A: I’ve been lucky enough to visit some of the wonders of the solar system, I think my first sight of the rings of Saturn through my new café window must be my favourite.

Q: Tell me a little about your author. Has he written any other books?
A: Richard writes a lot of other Science Fiction and Steampunk adventures, he doesn’t give me his undivided attention, which I find vaguely annoying, it should be all about ME!

Q: Is your author working on anything else at the moment?
A: I believe he has a sequel to his latest novel Life and Other Dreams (which wasn’t about me, even so, it was supposed to be quite good) in progress, he works on several books at once.

Q: How do you think authors, such as your author, can be helped or supported by readers or groups?
A: We should all share the new stories we’ve read, pass on news about the wonderful authors out there. Read out of our comfort zone.

Thank you, Andorra, it was a pleasure talking to you. Would your author like to add a short excerpt?
And while he is doing that… do finish off those last few chocolates.

EXCERPT

“You’re not serious are you?” said Cy as I walked around the tables to the far wall. “We can’t run a café.”
I stopped and turned back to him.
“Why not, Cy? It’s perfect; remember what that bloke said on the shuttle. There’s only one other place selling leisure here, all we have to do is pretend it’s the shop in London, just coffee and cake instead of clothes.”
“Can you bake cakes, Andi?” He had a point; he’d tried my sandwiches once. He reckoned that I wouldn’t be able to do toast without a recipe and a video. I’d show him.
“Yes,” I said with confidence, and then I thought about it, “No… sort of; how hard can it be?” My mum had taught me and she’d never killed anyone.
I turned back and continued to the end wall. I had thought the place was dark, I was about to find out if I could make it lighter.
I had spotted the control for the picture windows all along one wall, reaching over the stained bench seats I grabbed it and turned it. The switch was sticky and resisted but in the end it rotated and with a whir the view was revealed as the shutters went up.
Saturn’s rings in all their glory filled the room with reflected light, the space opened out and the room became more than just a derelict and unloved bar. Even an ‘ucky’ one.
This was now my café, and I was going to make it work. I’d even thought of a name. And Cy was going to help me.
“Welcome to the Oort Cloud Café, Cy.”
He shook his head. “I just hope you know what you’re doing.”
